Even though it may seem that Asian American and immigrant communities are no longer experiencing the level of overt hatred, ridicule, and violence they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, the scars left by the unprecedented surge in anti-Asian violence during that time remain deep. The short documentary Voices Against Anti-Asian Hate recounts that dark time, highlighting how the surge in anti-Asian hate crimes during the pandemic reverberated through individuals, families, and communities.

How to Have an American Baby is a kaleidoscopic voyage into the once-booming shadow economy catering to Chinese tourists who travel to the U.S. on “birthing vacations” in order to obtain American citizenship for their babies. Tracing the underground birth tourism industry from Beijing to Los Angeles, How to Have an American Baby weaves together vignettes and deeply private moments to tell the story of a hidden global economy. Followed by a Q&A with director Leslie Tai.

The Skokie Public Library is hosting a screening and a talk about three short films shot in Chicagoland and created by Korean or Korean American filmmakers.



These short films cover a range of topics, including friendship, national identity, relationships, connections, family, and more. Discussion with the filmmakers follows the screening. Free and open to the public.
